Each year, Clarivate publishes a ‘highly cited researchers’ list recognizing pioneers in their field. This list contains researchers who have demonstrated significant influence through the publication of multiple papers, highly cited by their peers, during the last decade (2009-2019). No less than 19 VIB researchers are part of this highly acclaimed group of influential scientists.

A select few
In 2020, fewer than 6,400, or 0.1%, of all the world’s researchers have earned the distinction of being a globally highly cited researcher. Being part of this list represents a recognition of the exceptional influence in a research field, as demonstrated by multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in Web of Science.

Lieve Ongena (VIB Sr Science policy and International Grants Office Manager): “With 19 VIB scientists listed as a highly cited researcher it is clear that VIB research is influencing peers in the field, and that VIB researchers are asking bold research questions of global importance and interest to their fields.  No method of research excellence or impact measurement is perfect, but it is good to try to measure the influence of researchers by their peers, and this list tries to do so in an objective and transparent way.”

Rich science at VIB
An impressive group of 19 VIB scientists are listed as highly cited researchers for 2020, exemplifying that VIB is carrying out word-leading science. Since publications and citations are often called the currency of academic science, this list shows that VIB is 'rich' in outstanding science. We are proud to see 2 VIB newcomers in this highly cited list: Yvan Saeys and Els Pardon. In addition, the fact that almost all VIB centers are represented in the highly cited list, indicates the overall recognition of VIB scientists in the different fields of VIB research.
