Microbiota Project

Via this project, the researchers and VIB will spread awareness about the potential of microbiota-mediated treatment options in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The development of alternative treatment strategies for IBD will decrease the healthcare burden and the impact on patients’ personal lives.

Inflammatory bowel disease

This project is focused on the development of microbe-based therapies for several forms of inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), for which there is a global need for more efficient treatment strategies.

Feacal transplant

Explore faecal transplant as a treatment option for IBD and investigate why the treatment works in some cases but fails in others.

Repurposing existing drugs

Existing drugs can be repurposed to target the microbial composition of the gut. This can have an indirect, beneficial effect on inflammatory bowel disease.

Microbial cocktails

Microbes of the gut are identified and used to develop microbe-based therapies to treat several forms of inflammatory bowel disease.
