VIB performs world-leading basic research on some of the most poignant biological questions of our time. It is VIB’s strong conviction that fundamental scientific research – often guided by serendipity – can result in major, sometimes unforeseen, breakthroughs. However, VIB also acts as a hub in the biotech ecosystem through encouraging spin-offs and pursuing business opportunities. These, in turn, can generate novel prospects for basic research in a positive feedback loop.
VIB campuses and research centers
Based on a close partnership with five Flemish universities - Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Hasselt University - VIB unites the expertise of all its collaborators in a single institute. VIB consists of eight thematic research centers with a total of 81 research groups that are embedded in the campuses of the partner universities.

Technological advances set the pace for research.
The basic research at VIB continuously pushes the boundaries of scientific knowledge. In doing so, the need for disruptive technologies has become apparent. Therefore, VIB devotes a lot of attention to the development of core facilities that bundle the institutional technological expertise and make this available to scientists inside and outside of VIB, as well as to industrial partners. Furthermore, VIB has established a dedicated Tech Watch team to make sure that cutting-edge technologies are spotted and integrated into the cores and research centers at an early stage, strengthening the innovative status of VIB research.
Towards new asthma treatments
Researchers from VIB and argenx have solved a century-long puzzle about the presence of protein crystals in asthma. Normally, proteins do not crystallize in the body, but there are some instances where this process does occur. Charcot-Leyden crystals are made from the protein Galectin-10 and were discovered in the airways of asthmatics as early as 1853.
A landscape of blood vessels
Pushing the boundaries of cancer research forward with pioneering work on endothelial cells. Our scientists are providing an even more detailed, single-cell look at cells and blood vessels by using an array of high-end technologies, single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing, mass cytometry, proteomics, big data analysis, as well as functional testing of identified targets.
Scientists at VIB conduct groundbreaking biomolecular research in life sciences, leading to sustained scientific progress and contributing to a better world. They study the molecular mechanisms that shape human health and disease, and plant growth and development. The research results can lead to improved detection, prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as enhanced crops and food products.

VIB is one of the founding members of EU-LIFE, an alliance of leading European life sciences research institutes, which contributes to the improvement of research by influencing European science policies and by developing, implementing and disseminating best practices in the organization and management of research institutes.
