VIB campuses and research centers

In close partnership with five Flemish universities - Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Hasselt University - VIB unites the expertise of all its collaborators in a single institute. In total, VIB consists of eight thematic research centers with 81 research groups that are embedded in the campuses of our partner universities.

Research areas

Scientists at VIB conduct pioneering research across a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from cancer, inflammation and neuroscience to plant biology. Our scientists are world leaders in their fields, and this is one of our greatest strengths.

Life sciences are evolving at an ever-increasing pace, and the boundaries of our knowledge are constantly shifting as new technologies emerge. VIB scientists are at the forefront of all these developments and can rely on excellent support staff and state-of-the-art lab facilities and equipment.

Labs aren't just places to perform experiments. Labs are places where colleagues exchange experiences, help each other, and form friendships. VIB encourages a sensible work-life balance, as well as an enjoyable life within its labs and headquarters.

Our research

Scientists at VIB conduct groundbreaking biomolecular research in life sciences, leading to sustained scientific progress and contributing to a better world. They study the molecular mechanisms that shape human health and disease, and plant growth and development. The research results can lead to improved detection, prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as enhanced crops and food products.
Since it was founded in 1995, VIB has led the way in showing how excellence in strategic basic research combined with a proactive technology transfer strategy can create tangible results that improve society as a whole.

EU Life: Europe's top life sciences research alliance

VIB is one of the founding members of EU-LIFE, an alliance of leading European life sciences research institutes, which contributes to the improvement of research by influencing European science policies and by developing, implementing and disseminating best practices in the organization and management of research institutes.
