Physcomitrella patens, the spreading earthmoss, is a moss that grows on exposed mud and earth around the edges of pools of water. It is one of a few known multicellular organisms with highly efficient homologous recombination, which makes it an interesting model organism for studies on plant evolution, development, and physiology, as well as for biotech applications.
