How do I acknowledge the Nucleomics Core in my paper?
We ask you to acknowledge the Nucleomics Core in all papers to which our facility has contributed. Please refer to the Nucleomics Core as follows:
[Microarray / Sequencing / Data /…] production and/or analysis was/were performed by VIB Nucleomics Core (www.nucleomics.be).
Do you provide DNA or RNA extraction as a service?
Currently we do not provide DNA or RNA extraction as a service to our customers. However, we can be an intermediate for outsourcing your samples for RNA/DNA extraction to a collaborative service facility with which we have good experiences. Please contact us for more information.
Is VIB a university?
No, not exactly. VIB is a research institute that combines lab groups from centers which are embedded in the five universities in Flanders. These lab groups are specialized in biotechnology and life sciences (ranging from molecules, over plants, to brains) and VIB supports these groups and facilitates collaboration between them.
Can I do a PhD at VIB?
Yes, you can. Through its partnership with five Belgian universities, PhD students at VIB are jointly part of VIB and the university that houses their lab group. So, the PhD will also be awarded by the university where the PhD student is registered.
How do I join VIB?
Thanks for your interest. Feel free to browse our open jobs. Alternatively, if you are interested in an academic career, you can contact the leader of the lab group in which you’re interested and VIB’s International Grant Office to see if they can help you attract your own funding for a PhD or Postdoc.
I have a health condition that is being researched at VIB, who can I contact with questions?
For all questions regarding the relevance of VIB research for treatment and therapy, please contact patiënteninfo@vib.be. Please do not change your therapeutic regimen or medication based on a VIB press release without consulting your doctor.
Does VIB use animals in scientific experiments?
There are research groups within VIB that use animal models to study various biological processes related to health and disease. Every research project using animals is approved by an ethical committee and strict guidelines concerning animal welfare are in place.
Does VIB use genetic engineering and investigate GMO’s?
Genetic engineering and genome editing are an inseparable and intrinsic part of the modern life sciences research that VIB performs. Some research groups within VIB are studying the potential of genetic modification to fight disease and improve crops. In crops, genetic modification is only one of many breeding technologies available. All research involving GMOs is performed while complying to strict EU legislation.
Can I support VIB research?
Yes, thank you for your interest in supporting VIB research. Funding scientific research is not an easy task, and every contribution helps our scientists perform breakthrough research on various health conditions and beneficial applications of biotechnology.
Does VIB organize outreach events?
Yes, absolutely. VIB actively supports and encourages its scientists to do outreach activities. One example is ‘Wetenschap op stap’, where VIB scientists visit secondary schools to explain and demonstrate their research. VIB also organizes an annual ‘Biotechdag’. This is a full day packed with talks, demonstrations, children’s activities, and much more. Finally, VIB has a dedicated Conferences team that organizes several internationally renowned scientific conferences, attracting top scientists and key opinion leaders in biotechnology from across the globe.
