VIB in brief
VIB is an entrepreneurial non-profit research institute, with a clear focus on groundbreaking strategic basic research in life sciences and operates in close partnership with the five universities in Flanders – Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Hasselt University.
Innovation and business
Technology transfer is firmly embedded in VIB’s mission. VIB research leads to new and innovative insights into life processes, benefiting society as a whole. Our Innovation & Business team focuses on translating research results into diverse new products, agricultural innovations, medicines and therapies that improve lives.
VIB performs world-leading basic research on some of the most poignant biological questions of our time. It is VIB’s strong conviction that fundamental scientific research – often guided by serendipity – can result in major, sometimes unforeseen, breakthroughs.
Technologies & cores
The basic research performed at VIB pushes the boundaries of scientific knowledge. In doing so, the need for disruptive technologies has become apparent. For this reason, VIB has bundled the technological expertise of the entire institute in a core facilities program to make it available to scientists within and outside of the organization, as well as to industrial partners.
Remarkable Biotech news
VIB’s newest spin-off, Augustine Therapeutics, aims to develop therapeutics for patients suffering from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and other neuromuscular diseases. CMT is the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy, with high unmet medical needs. The newly formed company is rooted in the research of the VIB-KU Leuven labs of Ludo Van Den Bosch, Joris de Wit and Bart De Strooper. These scientific teams uncovered several biological pathways in peripheral neuropathies that represent promising therapeutic targets for CMT, including histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6).
Research at VIB aims to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. Science, though, is not separate from society. Quite the opposite: science and society support and advance each other. VIB invests significantly in ensuring the largest possible positive societal impact of its research. Through several initiatives we develop basic research findings into benefits for society, ranging from new therapeutic compounds to crop improvements aimed to guarantee food production in a changing climate.
