PID documentary
How the PID docu came to be
Primary immune defiency, or PID in short, labels over 400 congenital disorders of the immune system. The PID Grand Challenges project aims to investigate new forms of PID and guide therapy decisions in the clinic.
Consulting PID patients
A reversed science café was organized during a PID patient day, to consult PID patients and their environment about daily struggles in the context of their disease. It became clear that there is little understanding for patients with the disease, especially for children because they look healthy but might be absent at school for several days when they have to go to the hospital for treatment.
Informing the public
After discussing the issue with patients, clinicians, researchers and a patient organization, a documentary consisting of three parts was proposed to raise awareness about the problems PID patients face: 1) a funny play that exaggerates the problems that school teachers face 2) the daily life of PID patients 3) an introduction by Krista Bracke, a patient organisation representative and PID patient herself.
Launching the documentary
This documentary was launched during the “World PI week” and was nominated for the Edelweiss award by the Belgian patient organization RaDiOrg. Additionally, this project was highlighted during the patient engagement session of the European Biobank Week 2021.
