Biotech for security and public health resilience

Biotechnology as a strategic lever

The Flemish Government has identified biotechnology as a key strategic lever within the FISD, building on Flanders’ strong biotech ecosystem with its scientific expertise, advanced infrastructure, and innovation capacity.

Three complementary domains drive this ambition:

Detection and protection against CBRN threats

Solutions for detecting and monitoring chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats, including smart sensors, AI-driven analysis, medical countermeasures, and safeguarding food and water supplies.

Robust and local biomanufacturing of critical supplies

Strengthening regional production of medicines, materials, and other essential resources through pilot facilities and flexible, scalable production systems deployable in crisis situations.

Advanced medical and health technologies

Wearables, biosensors, and data-driven health platforms that support resilience, rapid medical response, and recovery.

Our goal is to safeguard public health through readiness. Stronger diagnostics, biomanufacturing, and health technologies enable faster, more effective responses when they are needed most.
