About

The Flemish Gut Flora Project

What does your gut flora say about your health?

Previous studies have shown that there is a correlation between the composition of the gut flora and, for example, overweight or disorders like gut inflammation and diabetes. Such results naturally make us dream of the possibility of remedying conditions or alleviating their symptoms through interventions on the gut flora. We hope this Gut Flora Project allows us to make strides toward unraveling the relationship between an individual and his or her gut flora.

The more people participate in this project, the faster we can take steps in the important research into the relationship between the billions of bacteria in our body and our health. We are proud and happy that so many Flemish people participate enthusiastically in our research project.

So you think you’re human?

Professor Jeroen Raes is a world authority when it comes to deploying genomic technologies to study the role of gut flora in health and disease. Among other things, Jeroen Raes discovered that people can be classified into three types, according to the composition of the gut bacteria in their colon: the so-called “enterotypes”.
