Recruitment and Selection Principles
A thriving research institute relies on a diverse team with a wide range of talents, expertise, and skills. This diversity requires a thoughtful and structured approach to recruitment and selection. At VIB, we are committed to transparent, inclusive, and merit-based hiring practices.
Recruitment principles
- Open and accessible opportunities
All VIB vacancies are publicly posted on our website and other relevant platforms, and are open to candidates of all nationalities. - Clear and structured job descriptions
Every vacancy follows a consistent format to clearly communicate the job objectives and the profile we are looking for. - Efficient and transparent process
Applications are submitted through a dedicated online system, ensuring a streamlined and fair process for all applicants. Candidates complete a standard application form to facilitate objective comparison. - Interview procedure for candidates
All candidates who are shortlisted based on their CV are first interviewed either in person or online. If successful, they are invited to the lab for a presentation and a series of interviews with team members. This comprehensive process ensures well-informed and balanced hiring decisions. - Transparent communication
Candidates will receive feedback regarding the outcome of their application.
Selection principles
- Scientific merit and competence fit
The primary selection criteria are the scientific strength of the CV and the alignment between the required and offered skills and competencies. - Balanced evaluation
While bibliometric indicators are considered, they are weighed alongside other important factors such as teamwork, communication skills, English proficiency (spoken and written), and, where relevant, teaching experience and experience in mentoring junior researchers. - Equal opportunity commitment
VIB does not consider nationality, gender, or political or religious background in its selection process. Family circumstances, such as career breaks for caregiving, are not viewed negatively. - English proficiency
Strong communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are essential for most roles. - Integrity and compliance
In line with the NIS2 Directive, VIB is committed to high standards in cybersecurity and risk management. Integrity is a core value, and as such, it is recommended that this is consistently evaluated throughout the recruitment process, regardless of the position.
