VIB VIB Hooray
Introducing the VIB Principia Curiosa
Throughout the history of science, great minds have moved the world forward by putting words to the principles behind discovery. Newton had his Principia Mathematica. Darwin articulated natural selection. Mendel revealed the laws of heredity. These ideas helped explain how the world works and gave generations of scientists a shared way of thinking.
At VIB, we want to do something of our own.
Not by defining the laws of nature, but by capturing what drives how we explore, collaborate, and turn questions into impact.
We call them the VIB Principia Curiosa: our principles of scientific curiosity.
We believe that curiosity attracts curious minds. That it grows when it is shared. That it connects people across disciplines, technologies, and perspectives. That it turns questions into momentum, and discovery into real-world impact.
Why does this matter? Because curiosity-driven research is one of the reasons people come to VIB, stay with us, and do their best work here. It shapes our scientific culture, our community, and our appeal as an employer. It draws in people who want to explore the unknown with like-minded people.
We introduce our Principia Curiosa to mark 30 years of VIB, but their purpose is future-facing. They are meant to guide us; they are what drives us and helps shape the future of VIB, always with curiosity at its core.
Our Principia Curiosa
Six principles have already been outlined. One will remain under wraps for now.
Our Principia Curiosa are open and evolving — they will continue to grow with our community. At the same time, we will highlight one principle together:
The ‘golden principle’ — the idea that best captures what curiosity means at VIB, and in essence, what we stand for.
This is the principle we will shape as a community, and it will be revealed during our 30-year celebration.
Principle one: No discovery without curiosity
Every breakthrough starts with a question; without curiosity, there is no innovation.
- Curiosity is the driving force behind fundamental research, where new knowledge begins.
- It pushes scientists to explore beyond what is known or expected.
- At VIB, curiosity lays the foundation for every discovery we make.
Principle two: Discovery drives impact
Discovery makes a difference at every stage of research. By advancing fundamental knowledge and translating insights into practice, science creates lasting societal value.
- Fundamental research expands our understanding of life and lays the foundation for future breakthroughs.
- Translational research turns insight into applications that address real-world challenges.
- At VIB, curiosity in fundamental research includes exploring possible applications.
Principle three: Curiosity multiplies when it is shared
Shared curiosity sparks new questions, builds unexpected connections, and opens up new ways of thinking.
- Collaboration accelerates discovery: one question leads to many more.
- Sharing knowledge strengthens impact across teams, disciplines, and the wider community.
- At VIB, openness turns individual curiosity into collective progress.
Principle four: A mind in pursuit stays in pursuit
Discovery is not a moment, but a continuous journey of learning and refinement.
- Persistence is essential: answers often lead to deeper questions.
- Scientific progress requires focus, dedication, and resilience.
- At VIB, we foster a culture of continuous development to stay at the forefront of science.
Principle five: Culture shapes curiosity
Curiosity flourishes in the right environment. At VIB, our culture - guided by shared values - determines how we collaborate, how we question, and how science can thrive.
- Our values guide how we work: international collaboration, inclusiveness and sustainability are central to our culture.
- An open and supportive environment empowers people to ask bold questions, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another.
- At VIB, we nurture a strong, value-driven culture and create the conditions for excellent science and lasting impact.
Principle six: Failure fuels curiosity
Setbacks are not the end of discovery; they are part of the process.
- Failure reveals new insights and sharpens scientific thinking.
- Learning from what doesn’t work leads to better questions and better solutions.
- At VIB, we see failure as a necessary step toward breakthrough innovation.
Six principles have already been outlined. One will remain under wraps for now.
This is the principle we will shape as a community, and it will be revealed during our 30-year celebration.
